The Cherepish Monastery "Dormition/Assumption of the Mother of God" is located in the Iskar Gorge, between Lyutibrod village and Cherepish station. It is one of the most famous monasteries in Bulgaria, situated among majestic rocks near the Iskar River.
The monastery was founded in the 14th century during the reign of Tsar Ivan Shishman (1371–1393) and is associated with important historical events, including the struggles against the Ottoman invaders. Legend has it that its name (derived from the Bulgarian word for skull, cherep) comes from the bones of fallen soldiers after a battle at the end of the 14th century.
During the Bulgarian Revival, the monastery served as an important educational center where books were created and copied. Today, the site is a popular destination that brings together history, architecture, and an impressive natural environment.
